Take measures to preserve the existing patch_d2.mpq (unless you never want to play vanilla again without reinstalling). Highest priority is getting the mod to some runnable state on the "modern" version, 1.14+(some letter of the alphabet) but the procedure will remain the same: If you can get D2 running on patch 1.11b (or 1.12,) good on you but it will probably have to be run on a VirtualBox or something at this point (in 2018) So far, this has taken the form of 50+ new runewords, several new skills, additional sockets in some items, and much more. This time, whenever I find myself thinking “Damn, it’d be cool if was in D2,” I add it. 
Now in 2010, its time for another D2 binge. It’s one of those games you get a spontaneous urge to play a couple times a year.
Time and again, I come back to Diablo II. When Diablo II came out in 2000, I was already a fan of the first game and was instantly hooked. The Abyss is a mod I made for Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.
